Irrigation Systems

Facts and Questions Answered

Q: Which grass is best for me?

A: Conditions vary from site to site. Knowing factors such as soil condition, available sunlight, location, slopes, trees, irrigation and maintenance needs will determine which grass will perform best for you. Contact us so that we can assess your site’s needs. We have the ability to do custom seed blends.

Q: How long will it take before we see some results?

A: Under ideal conditions as soon as 7 days. Ideal means, the ground kept damp, plenty of sunlight and temperatures above 65 degrees. But we’re on The Outer Banks and the weather here changes constantly. You should have results by 14 days.

Q: How long should we stay off of it?

A: Soil conditions and percentage of established grass coverage dictate how durable your new lawn will be. Heavy traffic or large pets can destroy a newly seeded lawn, especially if your new lawn is planted over sand. You should stay off of it for as long as you can.

Q: I am seeing some weeds in my new lawn, should I apply a “Weed and Feed”?

A: Absolutely Not. You should wait 1 year before using a Weed and Feed product. Weed and Feed products would certainly damage a new lawn. You can fertilize now but control your weeds on an individual basis by hand or with a product like Round Up. You can buy it for about $10 a gallon. Follow the label directions. Using the Foam setting, carefully walk around the area and spray the weeds. Avoid using too much or getting over spray around the weed. This will kill everything in the area in about 1 week. Look for the weed source. It’s usually your neighbor’s yard. Your walk around will also be a good time to see how the lawn is maturing and if you need to adjust your irrigation.

Q: How often will I need to water my newly hydroseeded lawn?

A: It could be as little as 3 times a day to as much as 10 minutes on the hour. The area needs to be kept damp and not allowed to dry out for at least 3 weeks. Your site conditions and the weather will dictate how much watering is required.
